COUN3001: Change, Influence and Power Dynamics – Assignment 1:

COUN3001: Change, Influence and Power Dynamics

Unit description

This unit provides an in-depth understanding of change, influence and power and their impact on working with clients. The power differential and the potential use or abuse of power in counselling are explored. Change theory, change processes and influence are directly related to the counselling process. What is considered important in this unit is that an awareness and sensitivity are developed to the influence of change and power in the therapeutic relationship.

Purpose: This assignment is designed to challenge the student’s practical and theoretical understanding of how client change is facilitated in counselling. Students will view one of the three videos listed and write an academic essay proposing a coherent theoretical and practical understanding of how client change is facilitated in counselling. Process: View one of the three following videos available online through the ACAP Library. Each video includes relevant material on client change from several different counselling modalities. 1. Client-Directed Interaction: Adjusting the Therapy Not the Person (106:49 min). 2. Becoming More Fully Human (27:42 min). 3. Experiential Counselling & Psychotherapy (59:25 min). Link your learning about change from the video viewed and academic research to write an essay of 2500 words proposing a coherent theoretical and practical understanding of how client change is facilitated in counselling.
