Getting Started

In  this discussion you will complete a two-column proof. However, you will  make 2-3 errors for your classmates to find and reconcile. You can use  any strategy to create the proof. Additionally, you will find and  reconcile errors in your classmates’ proofs. Understanding proofs will  help you become a critical thinker.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Recognize direct and indirect proofs.
  • Formulate direct and indirect proofs.
  • Articulate in writing the interpretation and significance of mathematical proofs.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Review the following videos:
    1. Deductive Reasoning
    2. Reviewing Properties of Equality and Writing Two-Column Proofs
  3. Navigate to the threaded discussion and respond to the following:
    1. You will be assigned a problem based upon the First letter of your Last name.
    2. To  complete this problem, you will have to fill in each blank space with  the appropriate next step and rule/explanation that justifies the step.  DO NOT POST YET, see the next step.
    3. This next part is different than a typical post: After you complete your work, but before you post, you are to create 2 mistakes.
    4. You will then make your initial post with the 2 mistakes.
    5. Next,  you will need to respond to at least two other students that completed a  different problem than you trying to find the mistakes and explain why  they were mistakes.
    6. On the last day, you will respond to your own original post revealing the mistakes you intentionally made.
    7. Additional examples of proofs can be seen in the 3.3 Proofs homework
  4. Your initial post is due by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
  5. Read and respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by the sixth day, as well as all follow-up instructor questions directed to you, and don’t forget your final response on the last day of the workshop.
  6. Your postings should also:
    a. Be well developed by providing clear answers with evidence of critical thinking.
    b. Your observations should add greater depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas.
    c. Provide clarification to classmates’ questions and provide insight into the discussion.
    d.  Your two follow-up responses need to be clearly collaborative by  providing clarification and insight on issues in the discussion
