Length: 2000 -2200 words (40%) Aim: to critically examine the literature relating to a specific patient safety problem, identify key criteria that define best practice and critique relevant strategies for improving the quality of care and minimizing the patient safety problem. • Critically analyses the literature and relevant websites to support claims about the extent of the problem and its impact on patient safety (e.g. costs, morbidity and mortality). • • Considers the patient safety problem in the Australian context (or local setting) and the characteristics of the healthcare settings in which it occurs. Defining best practice (approx. 300 words) • • Identifies appropriate criteria and/or quality indicators that define best practice regarding the chosen patient safety topic. •

• Classifies the criteria as structure, process or outcome measures. •

• Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the chosen measures.

Strategies for improving the quality of care (approx.. 800-1000 words) •

• Identifies and critiques knowledge or scientific findings relevant for solving the identified patient safety problem. •

• Effectively synthesizes the literature including: comparisons of study findings, and highlights areas of agreement and disagreement, exemplary studies and gaps in the research. • • Utilizes current literature/evidence including Australian (or local) evidence where applicable. Conclusion (approx. 150 words) •

• Concludes assignment with a summary and reiterates the paper’s contention. •

• An overall judgement about the quality of the evidence that could be used to solve the patient safety problem is identified.
